Rewind: Tetons & Yosemite

This is a snippet from moleskine no. 8 (Fall 2018 to Spring 2019). I was creating a lot during this time. I had new found financial independence, was in my early 20s, and hadn’t entered grad school yet.

I’ve been thinking about my sketches from the Tetons and Yellowstone a lot lately. I made some art there. Just would like to share! This is September 2018.

This sketch is one of my all time favorites. The eye to hand connection was strong. I woke up early that morning and went to sketch out in front of those mighty rocks. The mechanical pencil lead I had was doing me services. I just love everything about this picture too- I got the mountain to line up so perfectly, you can really imagine the mountain range as a whole.

Many times when I live sketching, I don’t have the luxury of time to completely finish a spread. So when I can finish my sketches on the spot, it is extra special. Below are some examples of where I leave off and the finished spread.

Love this spread. Really encompasses a lot of Yellowstone. Saw so many creatures out there. The pencil I was using was so bomb.

One morning I sat out and drew various mountain ridges. There was a raptor bird presentation by the Nat’l Park Service to my right the entire time. I learned a lot.

This was one of the first trips I got to navigate on my own. That was special; remains to be one of my favorite travel tasks. I love understanding the land.

Below are some airport sketches.

I guess I’ve made it my practice to draw in flight, especially if it’s a couple hours long. Each sketch comes out differently; it’s dependent on my supplies, views, ease of drawing, and level of tired.

That’s what I made in Wyoming! It was a great trip. I learned a lot. Geology is so fun. Would love to do it again before the caldera explodes!
