Mosaics: Birdhouse (Pt. 1)

When I texted a picture of my latest mosaic project to my friend I got a "Stop it right now that’s too cute.” Honestly, agreed. I’m loving every moment of making this birdhouse!

When I was prepping for a craft day with my friends, I took a gander at Joann’s to see what they had. It was the first round of the everything-must-go sale and they had the cutest geometric clay birdhouses, so I grabbed a few. Somehow- no one used them and I had a vision.

A big love I have in art is nature and symmetry. What better canvas than a cone shaped birdhouse? I penciled in my idea.

I used these bright red pre-cut square mosaic tiles and made some petals by clipping a couple corners and rounding them with sand paper.

It came out wonderfully- what a great little entrance to a new home!

I moved on to the flowers. I wanted to keep my color scheme minimal and wanted to focus on primaries. I found a nice yellow and worked on shaping the petals. The sandpaper was crucial to achieve rounded edges. On the back side of the birdhouse I chose a pink petals to balance with red flower in the front. Each flower had a red center to keep that color present on all sides.

After the flowers were down, I moved on to the leaves. With my last mosaic piece, I broke each leaf into pieces so it would lay flush on the rounded edges of the pot. This time, I opted not to. I liked the clean look of a single-tiled leaf. This meant some of the leaf tips would stick out off the surface, but I was curious to see how I could get away with grouting it anyways.

Because of the quantity, sanding the edges with sandpaper was starting to cramp my fingers up. At some point I whipped out my orbit sander and started to use that- so much more efficient! I know there are glass tile sanders out there- more for stained glass purposes- but how many craft supplies can a girl hoard?!

Thus, we catch up to today.

Thus, we catch up to today. ⟡

I mean, are you kidding me??? It’s turning out so precious???

This is they stage where I am excited about what I’m making but I start to get nervous about messing it up. Either way, gotta keep on keeping on!

Now, I just have the background left. Originally I was thinking of going with a blue for the background, but now I’m leaning towards white. We shall see. I can’t wait to finish this bad boy and grout it!

As always, thanks for reading.
